Gabriel García Márquez excelled in literary productions in which the unusual constitutes a guiding axis. From the weave of the narrative elements, valuable reflections are promoted in the act of reception, as in the short story “Light is like water” in Strange Pilgrims (2001), by García, In it, the symbolic images of water and light, as well as the fictionally created space, provoke a deep thought about the scope and power of the imaginary in real contexts. By the way, Roas (2017) stated that literary fantasy is one of most realistic forms that exist. Therefore, this work develops a thematic-formal analysis of the short story in question to demonstrate the articulation of the elements of the narrative, in the specificity of the unusual, with a view to constructing meanings that promote reflections dear to reality (this understood as a cultural construction). Ceserani (2006) argued that the fantastic always tells a story to tell another.
